SML Meetup #16 – New Visions for Spatial Audio Off-site

Welcome to the Lab!

The Spatial Media Lab is hosting our next meetup! This will not be our normal meetup schedule nor structure, because we believe that it is incredibly important to hear spatial audio and not just talk about it. Therefore, for this meetup, we have a very special panel of guests whom will be speaking at the New Visions for Music & Sound festival in Berlin on September 5th & 6th. Since these experts will be talking about the future of spatial audio at the festival, we wanted to give the community the opportunity to hear the future of spatial audio from these visionaries.

Bio
Felix Deufel is a sound artist focusing on sound and space, spatial hearing, and the significance of soundscapes for both humans and the environment. His artistic works encompass room installations, compositions, field trips, and research. Deufel is the founder of Not a Number Studio, which is currently developing a 3D audio software. In 2020, he established the Centre for Immersive Media Art, Music, and Technology (ZiMMT) in Leipzig, providing a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the realms of immersive media art and technology.

Presentation
Felix will give a short introduction into grapes, a universal 3D audio control software, designed for live purposes, show control and composition of spatial audio formats, developed by Not a Number Studio in close collaboration with Daniel Rudrich. Felix will then share a captivating excerpt from his ongoing sonic conservation project, If We Vanish, created in partnership with sound artist Nikhil Nagaraj. Since 2022, they have been capturing the endangered soundscapes of some of India’s last untouched wildernesses—preserving these audio landscapes before they fade from existence.
